Four Hands, Two Sonatas (포핸즈) leaves on a high note

The tvN music drama aired its 12th and final episode on October 4 and saved its best for last: 9.4% nationwide on average, peaking at 10.6%, and 10.0% in the Seoul area with a peak of 11.4% (Nielsen Korea, pay-TV households). It started on August 29 and never looked back. Song Kang and Lee Jun Young play two young pianists from very different backgrounds who meet at an elite arts high school, and the story follows their friendship, rivalry and love across ten years, with Jang Gyu Ri completing the trio. Netflix lists the series in Mexico as Cuatro manos, dos sonatas and in Brazil as Quatro Mãos, Duas Sonatas, so it is an easy binge now that every episode is out.

The buzz chart: six weeks at No. 1

Good Data Corporation's FUNdex, the weekly chart that measures online talk about TV and streaming dramas in Korea, put Four Hands, Two Sonatas at No. 1 for the first week of October, its sixth week in a row. The ENA series Sinbyeong 4: Sabotage (신병4: 사보타주), which ended on September 29, held second, followed by The Ordinary Jackpot, A Love Other Than Yours and Netflix's Scandal. In the actor ranking the two leads were far ahead of everyone: Lee Jun Young took first place with a 14.78% share and Song Kang came second with 12.12%. Nobody else passed 3%. When a show finishes, its stars usually slide fast, so next week's chart will show who inherits the crown.

Love on the Menu (사랑이 온다) rules Sunday night

If you think weekend family dramas are old-fashioned, the numbers disagree. KBS 2TV's Love on the Menu scored 15.5% nationwide on October 4 and was the most-watched program of any kind that Sunday, according to Nielsen Korea. Ha Seok Jin plays Kim Mu Jin, the chef and owner of an Italian restaurant, and EXID's Hani (Ahn Hee Yeon) is Han Gyu Rim, the eldest of five siblings. They were a couple once, until she walked away because her family's needs left no room for love. Eight years later, they meet again. It premiered on July 25 with 11.7% and has grown steadily since. We could not confirm an international streaming home.

The Ordinary Jackpot keeps climbing

The office comedy about a team leader who wins the lottery and still shows up to work had a strong week. Its eighth episode reached a new personal best of 5.9% nationwide on tvN, Soompi reported, citing Nielsen Korea. It also ranked third on the FUNdex drama chart, and Lee Jun Hyuk, who plays the quietly fearless Gong Eun Tae, was the third most-discussed actor with a 2.74% share. The series has 10 episodes in total, so it is now heading into its final stretch. If you skipped it at the start, this is a good moment to catch up before the ending lands.

Scandal (스캔들): Netflix's Joseon-era game of seduction

Released on September 18 with all eight episodes at once, Scandal moves the French classic Les Liaisons dangereuses to Bukchon, in Joseon-era Hanyang (today's Seoul). Son Ye Jin plays a brilliant noblewoman who offers a risky bet to the most notorious charmer in the kingdom, played by Ji Chang Wook, and Nana plays the widow caught at the center of it. Jung Ji Woo directs. It hit No. 1 on Netflix's daily Korea chart one day after release, and in its second week it ranked third on Netflix's global non-English TV chart with 2.8 million views, entering the top 10 in 18 countries, El Salvador among them. It is rated for adults only, so plan your viewing accordingly.

A Love Other Than Yours (너 말고 다른 연애): the ten-year question

Seo Kang Joon and Ahn Eun Jin play Namgung Ho and Lee Mi Do, a couple who have been together for a decade and now have to decide whether what they share is lasting love or simply habit. When Mi Do's career as a film director stalls, she finds herself drawn to someone else, and marriage suddenly looks like a much harder question. The 14-episode KBS series began on September 12 and streams on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. Its TV rating is modest, 2.3% on October 4, but online it is a different story: fourth on the FUNdex chart, with Ahn Eun Jin and Seo Kang Joon fifth and sixth among actors.

Coming this weekend: the new arrivals

Some shows were already in the top 10 buzz chart before airing a single scene. 100 Days of Deception, tvN's 1930s spy romance with Kim You Jung and Park Jinyoung, ranked seventh and starts on Saturday, October 10. Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia, with Kim Ji Won as a surgeon who refuses to play hospital politics, ranked ninth and premieres on Friday, October 9; Kim Ji Won was already fourth among actors. Between Steps, ENA's tender romance with Choo Young Woo and Kim So Hyun, came in eighth after opening at 1.8%. Next week's chart will tell us which of these newcomers really takes off.
