Dreaming of cats: meaning in Korea

Korean tradition sees the cat as a mixed symbol: a crafty person close to you, or a special sensitivity asking for attention.

What they say in Korea 고양이꿈

In traditional kkumhaemong, the cat does not enjoy the fame it has online. It is said to stand for someone crafty or calculating around you, a charming person who may be looking out for themselves. A cat that scratches you is tied to small annoyances or to words that sting a little. But the reading changes completely if the cat is calm and lets you pet it: then it speaks of your own intuition, of independence and of an elegance others admire. If you hug a pretty cat, some families count it as the taemong (태몽) of a very charming child. As always in Korea, the detail of the dream matters more than the animal.

Depending on the details

if the cat scratches or bites you

It is read as a small disagreement or an unexpected criticism. Nothing serious: best not to make big decisions with people you do not know well yet.

if you shoo away or catch the cat

Chasing off a bothersome cat is read as settling an awkward situation. You shake off a worry or set a boundary you needed to set.

if the cat is black

In Korea it does not carry the superstitious weight it has in other countries. It is read as a mystery or a secret that will soon clear up, sometimes with information useful to you.

if the cat sleeps in your arms

A tender sign: trust being earned, a relationship growing closer or a season of calm at home. It is also sometimes told as a taemong.

And luck?

After a cat dream, some Koreans prefer to keep their secrets for a couple of days and calmly watch who comes around being extra sweet.

In other traditions

In many Western readings the cat stands for independence, femininity, intuition and mystery. A black cat may be tied to bad luck through superstition, and an aggressive cat to betrayal or fear of losing control.
