Dreaming of tigers: meaning in Korea

The tiger is Korea's national animal. In dreams it announces power, recognition, an influential person who helps you and a strong-willed taemong.

What they say in Korea 호랑이꿈

The tiger sits at the heart of Korean folklore: it shows up in grandmothers' tales, in minhwa folk paintings and even as the mascot of the Seoul Olympics. In kkumhaemong it counts as a dream of power. Seeing a majestic tiger is said to announce a promotion, a position of responsibility or help from an influential person. If the tiger walks calmly into your house, tradition speaks of protection and of a year in which you will earn respect. Riding a tiger is read as mastering a hard situation. It is also one of the most famous taemong (태몽), tied to brave sons and daughters with plenty of personality.

Depending on the details

if the tiger chases you

It is read as strong pressure or a big responsibility coming to find you. It may be a career challenge that scares you at first but will help you grow.

if you ride a tiger

An image of victory. You hold something powerful in your hands: a project, a leadership role, an opportunity. The advice is to stay calm so you do not lose control.

if a tiger bites you

Oddly enough, this reads as positive: a role or a recognition that sticks to you. In some cases, a job offer you will not be able to refuse.

if the tiger is white

The white tiger is a guardian in Korean mythology. It is read as spiritual protection, a good reputation and elders who give you their support.

And luck?

After a tiger dream, a Korean might finally ask for that promotion, pitch their project or, just for fun, scratch a lottery card.

In other traditions

In the West the tiger is usually read as wild strength, passion or held-back aggression. Being attacked by one is linked to fear of losing control or to a powerful enemy lying in wait.
