Samjae (삼재): Korea's three-year cycle of caution

In Korea, when someone hits a rough patch, somebody is bound to ask: "You're not in samjae, are you?" Samjae (삼재) is a three-year period that, according to tradition, calls for more care than usual. It comes around for everyone every so often, depending on their birth-year animal. Here is how it works, how to tell if it is your turn and how to get through it calmly.

Three years that ask for attention

Samjae means "three calamities". In folk tradition, it is a stretch of three consecutive years when it pays to be more careful: review decisions, do not rush and look after your energy. It is not a punishment, nor something that only happens to a few people. Everyone goes through samjae: three years out of every twelve, depending on the animal of their birth year. Then come nine years without samjae, until the cycle starts again. It is like a rainy season. It comes for everyone at some point, you know when it starts and when it ends, and the sensible thing is to go out with an umbrella instead of staying home afraid.

Coming in, staying, going out

The three years of samjae each have a name. The first is deul samjae (들삼재), the samjae that "comes in": the year unexpected changes start to show. The second is nul samjae (눌삼재), the one that "stays" or "presses down", traditionally considered the most intense of the three. The third is nal samjae (날삼재), the one that "goes out", when its influence gradually loosens. Thinking of it this way helps: the first year is for getting organized, the second for holding steady with patience and the third for letting go of what has run its course. Each stage has its own rhythm, like a wave that rises, breaks and pulls back.

How to tell if it's your turn

The calculation depends on your birth-year animal, and the twelve animals are grouped in threes. If your animal is the pig, rabbit or goat, your samjae falls in the years of the snake, horse and goat. If you are a tiger, horse or dog, it comes in the years of the monkey, rooster and dog. If you are a snake, rooster or ox, in the years of the pig, rat and ox. And if you are a monkey, rat or dragon, in the years of the tiger, rabbit and dragon. Remember that in this system the animal year changes at ipchun, around February 4. If you were born in January or early February, double-check which animal is yours.

Who is in samjae right now

With the table above, it is easy to find your place on the calendar. 2025 was the year of the snake, so pig, rabbit and goat entered their deul samjae. 2026, the year of the horse, is their nul samjae, the middle stage. In 2027, the year of the goat, those same three animals go through their nal samjae and say goodbye to the cycle. After that it is the turn of tiger, horse and dog, who begin their samjae in 2028, the year of the monkey. Meanwhile, the other groups are in their nine free years. At the start of every year, the Korean press usually publishes lists of the "animals in samjae", along with New Year predictions.

Customs and a calm outlook

The best-known custom is the samjae talisman, often featuring a three-headed hawk, the samdumae (삼두매), drawn in red; the Penn Museum in Philadelphia holds a 19th-century example. Some families also commission rituals to start the period peacefully. Many saju readers, on the other hand, stress something important: samjae decides nothing on its own, because every chart has its own flow. The most useful approach is to treat it as a gentle reminder. During those three years, protect your sleep, sort out pending paperwork, think twice about big decisions and lean on your people. It is caution, not fear.
