Gunghap (궁합): Korean compatibility before marriage

K-dramas have a classic scene: the family checks the couple's gunghap (궁합) before agreeing to the wedding. Gunghap is the compatibility reading between two people based on their saju. For centuries it was a formal step toward marriage; today it is, above all, a fun and sometimes eye-opening conversation. Here is how it used to be and how it is used now.

What gunghap is

Gunghap places two saju charts side by side and asks how they get along. It does not try to decide whether a person is "good" or "bad", but how their energies combine. Does one bring what the other lacks? Do they share too much of the same thing? Are there elements that clash and need care? The word is used mostly for couples, but in Korea people also talk about gunghap between friends or business partners. In everyday life, saying two people "have good gunghap" is an affectionate way of saying they understand each other effortlessly, like two pieces that fit.

A step in traditional weddings

In traditional Korean weddings, gunghap had a set place in the process. First, the groom's family sent the bride's household, through a matchmaker, the saju danja (사주단자), a document with the groom's birth details, and in doing so asked whether there was a will to marry. If the answer was yes, the bride's birth details were shared and the gunghap was checked. With that done, the wedding date was chosen and sent to the other family, who replied in turn. Then came the formal marriage letter and the gifts. The whole process was a careful conversation between two families.

What gets compared

There are simple gunghap and more detailed ones. The popular version compares only the birth-year animals, which is why lists of "animals that get along" are everywhere. A fuller reading looks at both entire charts, starting with each person's Day Master. That is where the five elements come into play. If one person is wood and the other fire, wood feeds fire: there is enthusiasm, but the wood may feel it gives too much. If one is water and the other fire, water controls fire: there is attraction and tension, and dialogue is needed. Readers also look at whether one chart balances what the other has too much or too little of.

Gunghap today

Today very few couples in Korea let gunghap decide a wedding, but many look it up out of curiosity. Some go to a saju café together as a date; others check it in an app, since many fortune apps include a compatibility section. Sometimes it is the families who are most interested, and the result becomes after-dinner conversation. The reading works mainly as a language for talking about the relationship: who needs more space, who flares up quickly, who keeps the peace. Coming from a third party, it is sometimes easier to hear, and to laugh at yourself a little.

How to read a gunghap with kindness

A gunghap is not a verdict. If it says there is tension, that does not mean the relationship will not work; it means there is something there to look after. Many solid couples have charts that clash, and they learned to talk precisely because of it. If you look yours up, try this exercise: read together the part about each person and say what feels accurate and what does not. Then choose one concrete thing to practice, like giving a heads-up before you need time alone, or taking turns choosing plans. Real compatibility is built in everyday life, and gunghap only lights up the map.

FAQ

Does a bad gunghap mean the relationship won't work?

No. A gunghap describes dynamics, not destinies. Areas of tension show where more dialogue and patience help. Many happy couples have very different charts.

Does gunghap work for friends or coworkers?

Yes. Although it is associated mainly with marriage, in Korea people also talk about gunghap between friends, business partners and work teams. The logic of the elements is the same.

Is comparing birth-year animals enough?

That is the simplest, most popular version. A full reading compares both entire charts, especially each person's Day Master and the balance of their five elements.
