Plot (no spoilers)
On Jeju Island, Oh Ae-sun grows up poor, bold and full of words she wants to turn into poems. Her mother, Jeon Gwang-rye, is a haenyeo, one of the island's women divers, and loves her daughter in a heavy, wordless way. Ae-sun has big dreams and very few chances to chase them. Beside her, almost always one step behind, is Yang Gwan-sik, a hardworking boy who has decided that, whatever happens, he will be on her side. He isn't the loudest or the luckiest person in the village, but nobody is more stubborn when it comes to her.
The story jumps back and forth across the decades, from their youth in Dodong-ri to their years as parents, with stops in Seoul. Much of it is told by their eldest child, Yang Geum-myeong, who looks back as an adult and slowly starts to see her parents as people, not just as mom and dad. Around the family orbit unforgettable neighbors, like Bu Sang-gil, a loud, self-important boat captain who was once set up with Ae-sun as a possible husband. Season by season, the series collects small, ordinary moments: work, money worries, arguments over dinner and sacrifices made without fanfare. It's a love story, and also a portrait of what it takes to raise a family.
Characters and their Saju
Oh Ae-sun 오애순
IU · Yin Fire · The Candle
Ae-sun is a bold, sharp-tongued girl from Jeju who dreams of becoming a poet, even when life keeps asking her to put the notebook away. IU plays her as a young woman, and Moon So-ri takes over in her middle years. Proud, emotional and fiercely honest, she never stops looking for words for what she feels.
If Ae-sun had a Saju card, it would be Yin Fire · The Candle: a small flame that the Jeju wind tries to blow out every season and never quite manages to. She doesn't light up a stadium. She lights a kitchen table, a notebook page and, in the end, a whole family.
Yang Gwan-sik 양관식
Park Bo-gum · Yang Earth · The Mountain
Gwan-sik is a hardworking young man who loves Ae-sun steadily and without any show. Park Bo-gum plays him young, and Park Hae-joon in middle age. He doesn't make speeches; he simply shows up, every day, carrying whatever needs to be carried. His love is measured in actions, not in words.
If Gwan-sik had a Saju card, it would be Yang Earth · The Mountain, like Hallasan watching over Jeju: solid, patient and always in the same place when you look up. Storms pass over him and he stays put. That is his whole way of saying I love you.
Yang Geum-myeong 양금명
IU · Yin Metal · The Jewel
Geum-myeong is Ae-sun and Gwan-sik's eldest child and only daughter, also played by IU. As an adult, hers is the voice that narrates the story, looking back at her parents with new eyes. Determined and proud, a lot like her mother, she has to learn what her family gave up so she could go further.
If Geum-myeong had a Saju card, it would be Yin Metal · The Jewel: polished by pressure, a little sharp at the edges and proud of her shine. In Saju, the Jewel grows wiser the day she remembers the hands that dug her out of the rock.
Jeon Gwang-rye 전광례
Yeom Hye-ran · Yang Water · The Ocean
Gwang-rye is Ae-sun's mother, a haenyeo who makes her living diving into the cold Jeju sea. Life has left her little room for tenderness, so her love comes out as hard work and blunt words rather than hugs. Her scenes with Ae-sun are some of the most moving in the series.
If Gwang-rye had a Saju card, it would be Yang Water · The Ocean, the same sea she dives into every day: cold on the surface, deep and fierce underneath. She doesn't explain her love. She just takes a breath and goes down again for her child.
Bu Sang-gil 부상길
Choi Dae-hoon · Yang Metal · The Sword
Sang-gil is a wealthy squid-boat captain and one of Dodong-ri's big shots, a man who gets by on swagger and loud words. He was once set up with Ae-sun as a possible husband. Rude and selfish on the surface, he shows a softer side over the years, especially when his own children are involved.
If Sang-gil had a Saju card, it would be Yang Metal · The Sword, swung a little too freely and a little too loudly. He cuts first and thinks later. But Saju says even a rough blade can be tempered, and life hands him plenty of fire for that.
