Plot (no spoilers)

Park Joo-hyung was adopted at the age of eight and grew up in Italy under another name: Vincenzo Cassano. Over time he became a lawyer and consigliere for the Cassano Mafia family, a strategist who solves problems without raising his voice. When a power struggle breaks out inside the family, he escapes to Seoul with a very specific goal: to recover a mountain of gold hidden in the basement of Geumga Plaza, an old commercial building full of quirky tenants.

The plan goes sideways right away. Babel Group, a pharmaceutical giant, wants the building and doesn't mind using illegal methods to get it. Its go-to law firm is Wusang, where Hong Cha-young works, an intense lawyer who wins at any cost and who starts out on the opposite side. Around them are Jang Jun-woo, a smiling, eager-to-help intern, and Choi Myung-hee, a former prosecutor turned the firm's most feared partner. Vincenzo soon learns that in Korea the villains wear suits and sign contracts. To fight them, he picks what he does best: beating evil with a villain's methods, with dark humor and a generous dose of Italian style.

Characters and their Saju

辛

Vincenzo Cassano 빈센조 까사노

Song Joong-ki · Yin Metal · The Jewel

Vincenzo was born in Korea, adopted at eight and raised in Italy until he became the consigliere of a Mafia family. He is elegant, calculating and almost never loses his cool. He arrives in Seoul thinking only of the hidden gold, but the tenants of Geumga Plaza start to matter to him more than he planned.

If Vincenzo had a Saju card, it would be Yin Metal · The Jewel: polished, flawless and with a shine that intimidates. A jewel makes no noise, yet it cuts glass. His surprise is finding out that even the coldest stone warms up in his neighbors' hands.

丙

Hong Cha-young 홍차영

Jeon Yeo-been · Yang Fire · The Sun

Cha-young is a Wusang lawyer with energy to spare and zero fear of looking silly. She wants to win every case, even if it means fighting dirty, and she reacts to everything with an intensity that borders on theatrical. Behind the drama there is a sharp nose for injustice that sooner or later comes to the surface.

If Cha-young had a Saju card, it would be Yang Fire · The Sun: she walks in shouting, gesturing and filling the room with heat. Sometimes she burns a little too hot, but she never hides behind a cloud. Where Vincenzo brings the plan, she brings the light that makes it work.

壬

Jang Jun-woo 장준우 (장한석)

Ok Taec-yeon · Yang Water · The Ocean

Jun-woo is the intern who works under Cha-young at Wusang. He is always smiling, volunteers for everything and seems unable to hurt a fly. That is exactly why he deserves a second look: in this series, too much kindness can also be a strategy.

If Jun-woo had a Saju card, it would be Yang Water · The Ocean: calm waves on the surface that invite you to swim. Underneath, currents nobody sees coming. In Saju the ocean holds enormous power; the question is always whether it uses it to give life or to drag things under.

庚

Choi Myung-hee 최명희

Kim Yeo-jin · Yang Metal · The Sword

Myung-hee left the prosecutor's office to become a senior partner at Wusang and Babel Group's legal right hand. She is cold, methodical and able to smile while she takes a rival apart. She knows every crack in the law and uses them without blinking, which makes her a formidable opponent.

If Myung-hee had a Saju card, it would be Yang Metal · The Sword, but a sword with no sheath, always drawn. It cuts fast and without hesitation. In Saju, metal truly shines when fire tempers it; without that limit, the blade ends up turning on its owner.

乙

Jang Han-seo 장한서

Kwak Dong-yeon · Yin Wood · The Climbing Vine

Han-seo is the illegitimate son of Babel's former chairman and the public face of the group. In public he is arrogant, impulsive and fond of over-the-top gestures. Under that pose is someone living under the pressure of a stronger figure, and that tension makes him unpredictable and, at times, surprisingly human.

If Han-seo had a Saju card, it would be Yin Wood · The Climbing Vine: he grows against a wall he didn't choose and adapts to survive. He looks fragile, but vines are stubborn. His lesson is to finally look for his own sun instead of someone else's shade.

Why so many people fell for it

Vincenzo mixes legal thriller, Mafia story and black comedy with a freedom few series allow themselves. Watching a Mafia lawyer defend a group of eccentric tenants against a corrupt conglomerate is as satisfying as it is funny. Netflix added it to its Latin American catalog and released each episode the same day as in Korea, starting February 20, 2021. Its finale hit a 14.6% nationwide rating, among tvN's highest at the time.
