Plot (no spoilers)

Lim Ju-kyung is teased so cruelly about her appearance that she shuts herself away studying makeup tutorials until she masters every technique. With brushes and patience she learns to completely transform her face. When her family moves, she starts at a new high school and, overnight, everyone treats her like a "goddess".

The change seems like a dream, but it comes at a price: the constant fear of being found out. Ju-kyung guards her makeup-free face like a state secret, and any slip could become a threat.

At school there's Lee Su-ho, the top student, popular but reserved, who carries a painful secret. By chance, he's the only one who finds out what Ju-kyung looks like without makeup, and an unexpected friendship grows between them. There's also Han Seo-jun, a rebellious, good-hearted classmate who used to be Su-ho's best friend, and Kang Su-jin, a seemingly perfect student who befriends Ju-kyung. Behind the laughs and school mix-ups, the series talks about self-esteem, social pressure and the courage it takes to show yourself as you are.

Iconic scenes

A Rooftop Misunderstanding

A Rooftop Misunderstanding

Su-ho spots Ju-kyung standing on a rooftop railing, completely misreads the situation and offers her an awkward, out-of-nowhere word of comfort. A first-episode moment that is equal parts clumsy and kind.

Jeong Fire (丁) kindness: a small candle offered in what looks like a dark moment, even when it isn't one. Clumsy warmth still counts as warmth.

Stealing the Show on Stage

Stealing the Show on Stage

Ju-kyung hams it up on an audition stage, and Su-ho falls for her right there. No perfect pose, no polished act: just playful, goofy energy, and that turns out to be exactly what wins him over.

Siksin (식신), the joyful output star, shines when you stop performing perfection. Playfulness is Fire energy that makes everyone around feel at home.

Reunion at Namsan

Reunion at Namsan

Ju-kyung and Su-ho meet again at Namsan in what feels like a fateful reunion. Of all the places in Seoul where they could have crossed paths again, it happens right here, and it feels anything but random.

Mu Earth (戊), the mountain, is a meeting point: everything flows toward it. Reunions on high ground carry that steady, grounding energy.

Characters and their Saju

乙

Lim Ju-kyung 임주경

Moon Ga-young · Yin Wood · The Climbing Vine

Ju-kyung is a teenager who was bullied over her appearance and found in makeup a way to reinvent herself. At her new school they see her as a goddess, but she lives in fear of her natural face being discovered. Her daily struggle to keep the secret is as funny as it is moving.

If Ju-kyung had a Saju card, it would be Yin Wood · The Climbing Vine: flexible, creative and able to change shape to survive. But her strength isn't in the shape she shows; it's in the root nobody sees, the one that keeps her growing.

辛

Lee Su-ho 이수호

Cha Eun-woo · Yin Metal · The Jewel

Su-ho is the school's top student, popular and reserved at the same time. He says little about himself and carries a painful secret that keeps him at a distance from others. He is the only one who knows Ju-kyung's real face, and that changes the way they look at each other.

If Su-ho had a Saju card, it would be Yin Metal · The Jewel: he shines on the outside, feels cold to the touch and hides a crack inside that nobody sees. Jewels like that need careful hands, not eyes that only admire the shine.

丙

Han Seo-jun 한서준

Hwang In-youp · Yang Fire · The Sun

Seo-jun is a rebellious classmate, the kind who doesn't follow the rules, but with a warm heart. He used to be Su-ho's best friend, and something broke between them. Under that defiant attitude is someone far more tender than he lets on at first glance.

If Seo-jun had a Saju card, it would be Yang Fire · The Sun: impulsive, warm and short on patience for rules. A rebel sun that gives warmth without asking permission and can't fake being cold, however hard he tries.

丁

Kang Su-jin 강수진

Park Yoo-na · Yin Fire · The Candle

Su-jin is the student who seems perfect at everything: grades, manners and friendships. When Ju-kyung arrives at school, Su-jin becomes her friend. But in a series that revolves around appearances, what you see at first glance doesn't always tell the whole story.

If Su-jin had a Saju card, it would be Yin Fire · The Candle: a controlled, neat light, always in its place. A candle seems calm, but its flame flickers too when the air in the room shifts.

Famous lines

“나 강수진 안 좋아해. 내가 좋아하는 사람, 너야”

I don't like Kang Su-jin. The person I like is you.

— Lee Su-ho · Su-ho's straightforward confession to Ju-kyung after she assumes he likes Kang Su-jin.

“잠깐 동화 속에 들어갔다 나온 거 같네. 현실은 시궁창인데”

Feels like I stepped into a fairy tale for a moment and came back out. Even though reality is a gutter.

— Lim Ju-kyung · Looking at a photo of herself with Su-ho, Ju-kyung muses that the moment felt like stepping into a fairy tale.

“좋아한다 임주경. 오랫동안 좋아했어”

I like you, Lim Ju-kyung. I've liked you for a long time.

— Han Seo-jun · Seo-jun finally confesses to Ju-kyung the feelings he has held on to for a long time.

Why so many people fell for it

True Beauty combines school comedy, romance and a theme that touches a lot of people: the pressure to look a certain way. The triangle between Ju-kyung, Su-ho and Seo-jun invites you to pick a side from the first episode. In Peru, Willax aired it on free-to-air TV from June 2022 under the title "Belleza verdadera", dubbed into Latin American Spanish. And its screenwriter, Lee Si-eun, also wrote Lovely Runner.
