Plot (no spoilers)
Jang Bong-hwan is a chef at the Blue House, South Korea's presidential office, with a talent nobody questions. One day he gets into trouble, falls into the water and, when he opens his eyes, he is no longer in the 21st century. It's 1851, he is in the Joseon palace, and he is living in the body of Kim So-yong, the new queen of King Cheoljong. His only goal is to find a way back to his own time and his own body.
Meanwhile, he has to survive a court full of rules he doesn't understand. The skirts are heavy, the palace ladies watch every move and the food could use some work. His husband, Cheoljong, looks like a figurehead king, controlled by Queen Dowager Sunwon and her powerful family, though there is much more behind his calm face. He also stays close to his first love, Jo Hwa-jin, while Kim Byeong-in watches the queen with an affection that goes back years. What starts as a comedy of errors turns into a mix of political intrigue, cooking and a romance nobody, least of all Bong-hwan, saw coming.
Characters and their Saju
Kim So-yong (Queen Cheorin) 김소용 (중전)
Shin Hye-sun · Yang Fire · The Sun
So-yong is the queen of Joseon, but inside she talks, thinks and eats like Jang Bong-hwan, a 21st-century chef. She breaks protocol every five minutes, says exactly what she thinks and sneaks into the royal kitchen when nobody is looking. Her boldness baffles the court and also puts her at the center of its schemes.
If So-yong had a Saju card, it would be Yang Fire · The Sun: impossible to ignore and not the least bit interested in the shadows of protocol. She heats up the kitchen, lights up the court and sometimes dazzles people who didn't want to look. Her challenge is learning when to turn the brightness down.
King Cheoljong 철종
Kim Jung-hyun · Yin Water · The Rain
Cheoljong looks like a weak, easy-to-steer king, a figurehead serving the family that controls the court. He speaks carefully and almost never asserts himself. But that appearance is armor: inside he is observant, steady and waiting for the right moment to show who he really is.
If Cheoljong had a Saju card, it would be Yin Water · The Rain: soft, quiet and easy to underestimate. Nobody fears a drizzle, but drop by drop rain carves stone. His lesson is trusting that patience is a form of power too.
Queen Dowager Sunwon 순원왕후
Bae Jong-ok · Yang Earth · The Mountain
Grand Royal Queen Dowager Sunwon is the one who really pulls the strings in the palace. With her family behind her, she decides what happens and what doesn't, and the king is little more than a piece on her board. She is cold, shrewd and hates surprises, which makes the new queen an unexpected problem.
If Sunwon had a Saju card, it would be Yang Earth · The Mountain: the whole court arranges itself around her, and nothing moves without her permission. She gives stability, but she also blocks the sun for anyone growing in her shadow. Even mountains change when the water keeps insisting.
Jo Hwa-jin 조화진
Seol In-ah · Yin Metal · The Jewel
Hwa-jin is Cheoljong's first love and enters the palace as a royal concubine. She is elegant, reserved and weighs every word, because she knows a mistake at court costs dearly. Between her and the new queen grows a rivalry that moves from jealousy to something much more complicated.
If Hwa-jin had a Saju card, it would be Yin Metal · The Jewel: delicate, bright and very aware of how others look at her. Jewels suffer with every scratch, which is why they guard themselves so carefully. Her growth comes when she stops chasing someone else's shine and finds her own.
Kim Byeong-in 김병인
Na In-woo · Yang Metal · The Sword
Byeong-in is the adopted son of Kim Jwa-geun, one of the most powerful men at court. He is serious, reserved and a man of few words. He has known So-yong for years and quietly looks out for her, which is why he is one of the first to notice the queen is no longer the same.
If Byeong-in had a Saju card, it would be Yang Metal · The Sword: upright, loyal and always on guard. His edge protects, but it also isolates him. In Saju, metal grows nobler when it learns to bend a little without breaking, and that is exactly his lesson.

Why so many people fell for it
Mr. Queen has an absurd premise and makes the most of it: watching a modern chef wrestle with Joseon protocol is funny in every scene, and the story still finds room for intrigue and tenderness. Netflix added it in 2023, and in Latin America it appears as Señor Reina (Sr. Rainha in Brazil). In Korea, its finale hovered around a 17.4% nationwide rating, one of the highest in cable TV history.
