Dreaming of an octopus: meaning in Korea
In Korea, an octopus in a dream speaks of gains you grip tightly, of bonds that do not let go and, sometimes, of a taemong.
What they say in Korea 문어꿈
In Korean, the octopus is called muneo (문어), and the word was written with the character for "letters" or "culture", so in some regions it was linked to educated people. That is why, in traditional ceremonies in certain areas, octopus was offered to the ancestors. In kkumhaemong, dreaming of a big octopus is said to announce gains held on to tightly, like its suckers: money that does not slip away, stable contracts. If the octopus clings to your body, the folk reading is wealth or a very close relationship. It is also a well-known taemong (태몽), tied to clever children with many talents at once.
Depending on the details
if the octopus clings to your body
A favorable reading in Korea: something valuable stays with you. It could be money, a loyal client or a person who has no intention of letting go of your hand, in the best sense.
if you catch a big octopus
It is read as securing an important gain. An achievement that takes skill, because the octopus is slippery. Your abilities are at their peak.
if the octopus squirts ink
Something gets murky for a while: unclear information, someone not speaking openly. Wait for the water to clear before you decide.
And luck?
After dreaming of an octopus, a Korean might have sannakji or an octopus stew for dinner, celebrating the luck with something tasty.
In other traditions
In the West the octopus is usually tied to control, manipulation or a person who wants a hand in everything. It also symbolizes intelligence, adaptability and the ability to do many things at once.
