Dreaming of a deceased relative: meaning in Korea
In Korea, dreaming of a relative who has passed is believed to be a visit: a message, a piece of advice or a blessing from the ancestors.
What they say in Korea 돌아가신 분 꿈
In Korea, the bond with the ancestors is still very much alive: at Chuseok and Lunar New Year, many families set out a memorial table called charye (차례) to honor them. That is why, when a grandfather, a mother or an uncle who has passed shows up in a dream, they are said to come with a message. If they smile, hug you or give you something, like money, food or an object, the reading is very favorable: protection, good luck and even gains. Some Koreans buy a lottery ticket after a dream like that. If the relative looks serious or worried, it is read as advice: check something you are neglecting. It is always a visit made with love.
Depending on the details
if they give you something
The luckiest variation. Receiving money, food or an object from a loved one who has passed is read as a concrete blessing: financial luck or unexpected help.
if they speak to you or give advice
Pay attention to their words. In Korea it is believed they may hold a useful clue about a decision you are making. Write them down when you wake up.
if they look sad or worried
It is read as a gentle wake-up call: maybe you are not looking after yourself. Rest, sort out your priorities and, if you can, visit family or their memory.
And luck?
After this dream, many Koreans visit the family grave, light incense or, if they received something, buy a lottery ticket with affection.
In other traditions
In the West dreaming of a deceased relative is usually read as grief being processed, longing or a need to close something unfinished. Many people also experience it as a comforting visit.
