Dreaming of bears: meaning in Korea
In Korea the bear is almost sacred: in dreams it announces patience rewarded, a protective person and, often, a taemong.
What they say in Korea 곰꿈
According to Korea's founding myth, a she-bear endured a hundred days in a cave eating only garlic and mugwort, became a woman and gave birth to Dangun, the first king. That is why the bear stands for patience, endurance and origins. In kkumhaemong, dreaming of a bear is said to announce a reward for your persistence, or the arrival of a protective, trustworthy person. A bear coming into the house is read as prosperity arriving calmly. It is also a much-loved taemong (태몽), tied to strong, kind-hearted children. A sweet detail: in Korean, saying someone is "like a bear" means they are slow but good-natured.
Depending on the details
if a bear chases you
It is read as a big matter you cannot ignore. Tradition advises facing it with patience, like the bear in the myth: time is on your side.
if you hug a bear
An image of protection and affection. Someone powerful is looking after you, or your own strength is growing gentler. It is also told as a taemong.
if you see a sleeping bear
Energy at rest. A project waiting for its moment, or a skill you have not used yet. Do not wake it before its time.
And luck?
After dreaming of a bear, a Korean might take the day more slowly, convinced that patience will pay off.
In other traditions
In the West the bear is tied to strength, protective maternal instinct and also introspection, because of hibernation. An aggressive bear can stand for anger, a domineering figure or a fear of being invaded.
